As a result of the child placement reform in 2006, there has been increased political awareness of how socially vulnerable children spend their leisure hours. Spare time has been emphasised as a possible resource, which may help children to a better life. This is the fifth report from a research project on socially vulnerable children’s spare time, carried out by the Danish National Centre for Social Research (SFI), COWI and the National Institute of Public Health. The report presents results from a survey of the correlation between socially vulnerable children’s participation in various types of leisure activities and their well-being and use of public social measures. The survey shows that children participating in organised leisure activities do better than children who do not. The knowledge from various studies in the project provides a possible solution to how leisure activities may be included in integrated municipal policies to improve the lives of socially vulnerable children. The study is based on data from the national Danish Longitudinal Survey of Children (DALSC) conducted by the Danish National Centre for Social Research (SFI), including a representative cross section of 6,000 children born in Autumn 1995.
