Children and young people in care do poorly in school. Consequently, there is a desire for more focus on educational offers when children and young people are being placed away from home. Commissioned by the Danish Ministry of Education, SFI – The Danish National Centre for Social Research has looked into collaboration on assessment before placement and on teaching, especially at residential care institutions with an internal school. This report is the first in a series of four reports on the subject. It provides a statistical overview of the research field in the form of quantitative analyses of existing data on children and young people who are placed away from home. The data basis is the first annual statistics from the National Social Appeals Board, published in 2006, on decisions made in placement cases, as well as SFI’s own Longitudinal Study on children born in 1995 who are or have been placed away from home. Subreports 2 and 3 are qualitative studies on collaboration efforts and priority-making for the education of children and young people, partly in the assessment phase, and partly during their placement in a residential care institution with or without an internal school. Subreport 4 will be published as a compilation of research results from all of the studies.
