For the first time in Nordic countries, families who have a child with reduced functional capacity are being compared with families in general. The children and the mothers of the children have all been interviewed for this survey. All the children were 11 years-old at the time of the interviews. The survey shows that parents of children with reduced functional capacity do not split up more than other parents. However, more mothers are single from the start and if they become single, they rarely start a new relationship. The survey also shows that children with a reduced functional capacity have more difficulties in getting friends than other children and that they spend much less time with their schoolmates. This survey has been financed by the Ministry of Social Affairs through a public pool of funds earmarked for disadvantaged groups.
