The hotline was a temporary collaborative project between the centre for games addicts (Center for Ludomani ) and Danske Spil, and it was in use in the period from mid-2008 until early 2010. Compulsive gamblers and their relatives, co-workers and employers, doctors and others could receive anonymous help through this hotline.
A comparison of calls to a similar phone line in Norway shows that compulsive gambling and the social and economic ramifications of gambling are less widespread among Danish compulsive gamblers.
This can be interpreted as national differences in the gambling habits of compulsive gamblers, as well as the distribution between gamblers at risk, problem gamblers and games addicts in Norway and in Denmark. However, the results may also be an indication that a large number of the compulsive gamblers who cannot be characterised as games addicts, contact the hotline rather than the center for games addicts (Center for Ludomani), which offers a similar service. As a result, the hotline could be ascribed a preventive role.
