What is the effect of a teacher receiving further training in appreciative classroom management on the educational achievement and wellbeing of pupils at elementary schools? SFI has investigated this question in a study involving 1,296 pupils and 58 teachers from 24 schools in Greater Copenhagen. The study shows it has a significantly positive effect.
These positive effects include better concentration and improved reading skills. The first is particularly apparent in girls, while boys generally become better readers after their teacher has completed a course in appreciative classroom management.
The project is one of the first Danish randomized controlled trials in a school context. The randomly selected teachers who took part in the course on appreciative classroom management were measured against a group of teachers who had not been on the course.
The study was financed by the Danish Council for Strategic Research, and it was completed under the Centre for Strategic Education Research at Aarhus University.
