The report illuminates a number of characteristics concerning problem gamblers compared with non-problem gamblers. It appears that more problem gamblers have had an insecure and uncertain childhood, more complain of bad health, more smoke and more have tried taking amphetamines than non-problem gamblers.
Problem gamblers also have a less realistic perception of their chance of winning in various games for money than non-problem gamblers. Most estimates of the size of the winnings and repayment percentages are at least 10 percent incorrect and they have less control of the probability of winning than they think. They are also more likely than other gamblers to believe that skill can increase their chance of winning.
The report is based on repeat interviews of 453 of the 8,000 problem gamblers and non-problem gamblers that were part of the SFI report: Ludomani i Danmark. Om udbredelsen af pengespil og problemspillere (Ludomania in Denmark. On the incidence of gambling and problem gamblers).
