The Greenland Self Government has started working on new ideas within the social and economic field. Most importantly, everyone must take responsibility for themselves and other peoples’ well-being and participate more actively in solving social issues.
The report illustrates the role of young people in this context. It is about what a group of youngsters know about social issues and what young people believe should be dealt with. NAKUUSA means “let’s be strong” and is a project being carried out by the Department of Family, Culture, Church and Gender Equality in the Greenland Self Government and UNICEF Danmark. The project comprises a number of activities which are to ensure that childrens’ conditions and rights are strengthened in Greenland. The Danish National Centre for Social Research has been commissioned to follow the four-year project, and to publish a brief report for each of the years 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
This report is the first from the project. The report consists of results from a questionnaire survey of 38 young people of 13-15 years old, who in October 2011 participated in the NAKUUSA Youth Forum in Ilulissat. The purpose of this report is to describe the knowledge and attitudes of young people on social problems and opportunities.
The report has been financed by UNICEF Danmark.
