Daycare, school and education
This report studies the continuing social distortions in recruitment of students for Master’s degrees and researcher training programmes. The report includes a theoretical part, describing theories to explain differences in recruitment for researcher training and Master’s degree programmes, and a literature part, dealing with specific experience with efforts to promote social mobility in university education. The third part of the report contains a summary and conclusion of the two first parts. All three parts of the report can be read independently. The study shows that the existence of social inequalities in the educational system is both empirically and theoretically well-documented, showing that social mobility in education is limited. There are several theories explaining how social inequalities arise and continue to exist, e.g. at the top of the university system. At the same time, the study reveals that there is very little documented experience of efforts to combat these differences. The three parts of the report will be included in a more comprehensive publication on this topic published by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Development.
