This report maps homelessness in Denmark for the first time. Social programmes and authorities within the field of homelessness have completed one questionnaire for each homeless person they came into contact with or were aware of during week six in 2007. This data gives comprehensive knowledge of the situation of homeless people in Danish society.
The questionnaires revealed that in week six, there were over 5,000 homeless people in Denmark. Around 3,000 live in the Copenhagen area. In addition to the almost 2,300 using shelters, reception centres and night-time drop-in centres, many more sleep on the streets or with family and friends. Many are addicted to alcohol, hash, drugs, and medicine, and many have mental and physical health problems in addition to nowhere to live.
