This report is about the career paths men and women choose in various parts of the public sector, and the career paths they see as possible.
The study shows among other things that throughout the Danish public sector, there is a clear over-representation of men in management positions. Furthermore, it shows that by far more men than women would like to pursue a career in management, and that more women than men are critical towards what a managerial position entails. Despite these differences, men and women more or less show the same degree of specialisation, and also express the same wishes for personal and professional development in their work.
The study is based on a questionnaire survey with responses from 5,000 employees and managers from the public sector. The study was carried out during the winter 2009-2010.
The study has been commissioned and financed by the Pay Commission (Lønkomissionen) set up by the Danish government.
