While considerable research exists on U.S. immigrant groups living in extended households, little is available on such households in Europe. This article therefore analyzes extended household living among Turkish immigrants in Denmark. From register and survey data, the article finds that 77 percent of young female and 37 percent of young male marriage migrants began life in Denmark in extended households. Using interview data, the article then explores how both gender and life cycle stage affect the reasons for such living arrangements. One find is that the percentage of Turkish males moving into extended households is far greater than the percentage of males doing so in Turkey, making extended household living more common for men after marriage migration.
